Our neighborhood screech owl called at dawn for two mornings in a row. Rather than emerging from our back tree line at dusk as usual, its trilling whinny overlapped with the daytime screams of boisterous migrating bluejays and a distant crow. These sorts of unusual intersections are on my mind as I begin my second fellowship with Creature Conserve’s Mentorship Program. Building on what I have learned so far, I will be developing a new advanced-level workshop, the Mentorship CoLab. We’ll explore mutualisms – biological relationships in which all participating life forms benefit – such as the woolly bats that sleep safely inside carnivorous pitcher plants, and provide the plants with a boost of much-needed nitrogen. These unexpected solutions to intractable problems will provide a basis for conversation and collaboration between a small group of artists and scientists. I’m also delighted to work and collaborate with our new cohort of Mentees, an inspiring group full of energy and ideas.
