Beavers: Restorers of Biodiversity
During the Summer of 2024, Alexandra curated a series of beaver-related programs for Creature Conserve. The goal of these programs was to ask: How can we remember what it means to be in relationship with the Earth and the water-cycle through beavers? The programs invited participants to delve into our shared past, present, and future, and learn what is possible if we let beavers do what they do best—cultivating pathways for coexistence and more-than-human infrastructures.
The event series included:
BEAVERS: Restorers of Biodiversity, a free online panel discussion on beavers includes presentations by Lorén M. Spears, enrolled Narragansett Tribal citizen & Executive Director of Tomaquag Museum; Ben Goldfarb, environmental journalist & author; Dr. Emily Fairfax, Assistant Professor of Geography at University of Minnesota; and Jasmine Gutbrod, Environmental Artist & Educator. You can watch a recording of the panel discussion on our YouTube channel.
READ / REFLECT CREATE: Beavers, a series of five real-time reading sessions centered on beavers. A creative prompt and reflective discussions followed each reading session.
Alexandra Ionescu (she/her) an Ecological Artist-Researcher and Certified Biomimicry Professional, currently expanding her knowledge of rewilding through beavers, Miyawaki forests, and constructed floating wetlands. She hopes to motivate others to ask, “How can humans give back to the web of life?” by raising awareness of biodiversity and natural cycles to challenge human-centric infrastructures.
