Creature Conserve Workshops

We give participants the opportunity to build their leadership skills and practice making conservation science more accessible, meaningful, and relevant. They consist of single or multiple sessions, including presentations, feedback opportunities, and access to supporting materials.

Our fundamentals and practice workshops bring artists, designers, writers, scientists, traditional knowledge holders, and other experts together around a theme related to animal extinction / endangered species and challenge them to combine their creative talents; our advanced and master class workshops help participants gain experience leading in the art-sci space, identify opportunities for collaboration across disciplines, and generate new art-sci work for wildlife conservation.

Our workshops include asynchronous sessions followed by live feedback/Q&A and live online sessions; we also provide a variety of supporting materials.

What is covered in these workshops?

Diving Into the Scientific Literature

This workshop is designed to help you gain practice finding scientific journal articles or lectures related to your specific interests related to wildlife conservation; reading / listening to science and finding inspiration in this material. The scientific literature is also the starting point for identifying a possible collaborator (scientist or researcher) or host institution (botanical garden, museum, land conservancy, research lab, university, or wildlife rehabilitation center) for future art-sci work related to saving species and their habitats.

Finding Your Creative Home

This workshop will help you find your art+sci+conservation creative home. The presentations include tips for how to effectively pitch your work (e.g., gallery proposals, writing submissions) and generate a list of conferences, exhibitions, festivals, newsletters, online forums, teaching opportunities, residencies, and workshops that encourage art-sci exploration related to conservation.

Behind the Research Paper: Making Science Visual

This workshop is designed to give you a deeper appreciation of the science that informs wildlife conservation by exploring both the technical and the personal sides of field research. Through a series of presentations, group discussions, and a creative exercise, you will practice making the stories that take place behind the scenes visual. Our goal is to help you bridge the gap between artists and scientists.

Where Art Meets Community

This workshop will help you develop a strategy for finding your art-sci community. The presentations include examples of working “in community” in the art-sci wildlife conservation space. They explore various methods for connecting and collaborating with your community through - and because of - art. They also share useful resources for exploring this topic further.

Finding a Collaborator in the Art-Sci Conservation Space

This workshop will help you develop a strategy for finding a prospective collaborator(s.) The presentations include examples of artists and writers collaborating in the art-sci wildlife conservation space; they share tips about how and where to find collaborators, which platforms and opportunities to use, and how to present your project idea.
