EMILY POOLE

  • 2019 Creature conserve SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT

  • MENTOR

  • 2022, 2020, & 2017 EXHIBITING ARTIST

“My time in Guyana (as a Creature Conserve Scholarship recipient) completely refocused my direction as an artist, and taught me that I don’t have to choose between passions for art and science in order to start making an impact in the world - I only have to combine them.”

As a 2019 Scholarship Recipient, Emily brought her considerable art-sci sketchbooking talents to Guyana as a visiting artist at Surama Eco-Lodge. While there, she offered inspiration and informal critique to students taking a study abroad course taught by Dr. Lucy Spelman for the Rhode Island School of Design. Several years earlier Emily had been a student on the same course.

Emily has also exhibited in several Creature Conserve exhibitions including Wildlife Trade and Conservation and Urban Wildlife: Learning to Co+Exist, both at the National Museum of Wildlife Art; and Re-Examining Conservation: Questions at the Intersections of the Arts & Sciences at Brown University.

EMILY POOLE a freelance illustrator from the mountain town of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. In 2016 I graduated from Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA in Illustration. My upbringing in a wild space in the mountains has greatly influenced how I see the world and the art I create. A lifelong love for nature and animals has guided my work into the realm of conservation. My goal is to use artwork to engage the public in learning about what's going on in the natural world and what we can do to protect it. I believe that playful and accessible images are the key to effective science communication.
